Infrared vs. Traditional Sauna: A Builder's Honest Comparison

Most comparisons of infrared and traditional saunas are written from the inside of the cabin: how the heat feels, which one helps you sweat, which one feels more authentic. That is worth knowing. But we get asked a different question, and it is usually the one that decides the project: what does each one actually take to put in your house? Here is the comparison from the builder’s side, where the real differences live.

They heat you two completely different ways

A traditional sauna heats the air. A heater full of stones runs hot, the room climbs to roughly 170 to 195 degrees, and you can pour water over the rocks to add steam. You are sitting in genuinely hot air, and your body works to cool itself against it.

An infrared sauna heats you, not the room. Panels emit infrared light that warms your body directly, so the air around you stays much cooler, usually 120 to 150 degrees, while you still sweat. Same destination, a gentler ride, and as you will see, a very different install.

The part that decides your project: electrical

This is where the two stop being a matter of taste.

A traditional electric heater is a serious electrical load. It typically draws 4,500 to 9,000-plus watts and needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit, hardwired by a licensed electrician, often in the 30 to 40 amp range. That usually means a run to your panel, possibly panel capacity to check, and in most jurisdictions a permit. None of that is a problem. It is just real work that has to be planned and budgeted from the start, not discovered halfway through.

Most plug-in infrared cabins are the opposite. They draw roughly 1,200 to 1,800 watts and run on a standard 120-volt outlet, sometimes a dedicated 20-amp one. For a lot of homes that means no new circuit and no electrician at all. The catch worth knowing: if you put several panels in a larger custom infrared room, the load adds up and you are back to planning a dedicated circuit. The plug-and-play simplicity belongs to the smaller prefab units.

We handle the electrical side in-house, which is the main reason we bring this up first. The heater is not an afterthought to the carpentry. On a traditional build it is the spine of the schedule.

Space, ventilation, and what the room demands

A traditional sauna is a built room. It wants proper framing, insulation, a foil vapor barrier, real ventilation, and a sealed door, because it is managing extreme heat and steam that will find any weakness in the walls. That is a construction project with a real footprint.

An infrared cabin is closer to a piece of furniture. Many arrive as panels that clip together in about an hour, need no plumbing, and ask only for a bit of clearance around them. If your constraint is space, time, or not wanting to open up walls, that difference matters a lot.

Heat-up time and running cost

Traditional heaters take longer to come up to temperature, usually 20 to 45 minutes, and cost more to run because of the load. Infrared is ready in 10 to 20 minutes and costs noticeably less per session. Over a year of regular use that gap is real but rarely large enough to decide the matter on its own. It is the install cost and the experience that usually drive the choice.

So which should you build?

Neither is better. They are different tools, and the honest answer depends on what you are after.

Choose traditional if you want the full ritual: high heat, steam, the social, old-world sauna feel, and you are willing to do a real build with proper electrical. Choose infrared if you want lower-effort installation, gentler heat you can sit in longer, lower running cost, and a unit that fits into an existing space without major construction. And if you genuinely want both, hybrid cabins exist that combine infrared panels with a traditional stone heater in one room.
