Materials alone for a dedicated room commonly start around $10,000 to $15,000 before labor, and full custom projects land anywhere from roughly $15,000 to $30,000 and up once you include premium wood, a quality heater, ventilation, electrical, and finish work. A larger build with integrated features like a cold plunge or shower climbs from there.

What drives the price
Prefab vs. fully custom. This is the single biggest lever. A prefab unit is a product you install. A custom sauna is a room you build, with framing, insulation, a vapor barrier, ventilation, and millwork. The second is more because it is genuinely more work, and it is also the only option if you want the sauna integrated seamlessly into a bathroom, pool house, or wellness area rather than sitting in a corner like an appliance.
The heater and the electrical behind it. A traditional electric heater needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit run by a licensed electrician, and depending on your panel that can mean an upgrade. This alone can swing the electrical portion of the job by $500 to $2,000 or more. Infrared on a standard outlet largely avoids this. Wood species. Cedar, hemlock, and thermally modified woods each carry different costs, and the choice shows up in both price and feel. It is one of the easier places to spend more or save, depending on your priorities.
Size and labor. A modest closet-or-small-room conversion might be 30 to 40 hours of skilled labor. A large custom build can run 40 to 60-plus. Labor typically accounts for 30 to 50 percent of a mid-range project, so square footage and complexity move the total directly.
Site and permits. Los Angeles permitting and labor rates run higher than the national average, and a traditional sauna’s dedicated circuit usually needs a permit. This is normal and worth budgeting for up front rather than treating as a surprise.
The extras. Chromotherapy lighting, integrated sound, upgraded controls, glass walls, custom benches. None are required. All add up. They are where a build goes from solid to luxury, and they are entirely your call.
