A good sauna feels simple when you are sitting in it. The heat is even, the wood is dry, the air moves without you noticing. That simplicity is the result of a handful of decisions made long before the first cedar board goes up, and most of them are hidden inside the walls. Here is what actually happens when we build one.
It starts with the space, not the wood
People picture the wood first. We start with the box. A sauna is a small, sealed room that has to hold extreme heat and constant moisture without passing either into the rest of your house. Before anything else, we settle three things: where it goes, how big it is, and how tall.
Height matters more than most people expect. We frame the ceiling at seven feet or just under. Higher than that and the heat stratifies. It pools above your head while the bench stays cool, and the heater works harder for a worse result. If the existing ceiling is taller, we drop a new frame to the right height. It is not a shortcut. It is how the room is supposed to perform.
Framing: standard lumber, a few deliberate exceptions
The frame is conventional 2x4 work for an indoor build, or 2x6 where we want deeper walls for more insulation. Two things we do not compromise on. The baseplate is treated lumber, because it sits closest to any floor moisture. And we never use metal studs, which conduct heat straight out of the room and make a clean vapor seal almost impossible. Each corner gets its own stud so the interior boards have something to fasten to later. It is a small detail that decides whether the finished walls feel solid or hollow.
The part you will never see, that matters most
Here is where a sauna is won or lost: insulation and the vapor barrier.
We fill the wall cavities with mineral wool, which handles heat better than standard fiberglass and does not sag over time. Walls get roughly R-13 to R-19. The ceiling gets more, R-19 at a minimum and higher for an outdoor build, because heat rises and the ceiling is where you lose it.
Then comes the vapor barrier, and this is the step people get wrong. We use a foil-faced barrier, and it goes on the hot side of the insulation, facing the inside of the sauna, right behind where the wood will go. The foil does two jobs at once. It reflects radiant heat back into the room so the sauna heats faster and holds temperature, and it stops the heavy, moisture-laden air from driving into the wall cavity. Install it backwards and moisture condenses inside the framing, and within a few years you have mold and rot behind walls that look perfect. We overlap every seam and seal it: tape at the joints, sealant at every electrical box and corner. One unsealed gap undermines the whole assembly.
Electrical and ventilation, done before the wood
The heater wiring and any lighting are roughed in before the walls close up. Sauna heaters pull real power, and the work has to be done to code by a licensed electrician. This is where having an in-house electrical team saves our clients a coordination headache.
Ventilation is not optional either. A sauna needs controlled air exchange, with a lower intake near the heater and an upper outlet, so the air stays breathable and the room dries out fully between uses. A sauna that cannot dry is a sauna that grows mold, no matter how good the vapor barrier is.
Finally, the wood
Now the part everyone pictures. Tongue-and-groove cladding goes up over the vapor barrier: clear cedar, hemlock, or thermally modified wood depending on the look and the budget. We run it so it can move with heat and humidity without buckling. Benches are built from the same family of woods and fastened from below, so there is no hot metal where skin touches. A properly sealed sauna-specific door finishes the envelope. An ordinary door leaks heat and undoes a lot of careful insulation work.
First heat
The last step is the satisfying one. We bring the sauna up to temperature for the first time, check that it heats evenly and holds, confirm the ventilation is moving air the way it should, and look for any spot that is not sealed. A sauna that was built right reaches temperature without straining and holds it steadily. That first even, dry heat is the whole point, and it is the payoff for every decision made inside the walls where you will never see it.
